Basic Literacy

The Basic Literacy program assists adults age 18 or over improve reading, writing, and communication skills through individualized one-on-one or small group tutoring. Students range from non-readers to those who read at a 9th grade level (and then are encouraged to take the Pre-GED or Spoken English course). All tutors are volunteers, who spend a minimum of 2 hours per week with each student. The program is learner-centered; that is, the tutor focuses on the goals and needs of the student in designing class exercises and homework.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program assists adults who have come to the United States from other countries, but despite often being well-educated and trained in their native countries, have limited knowledge of English. All tutors are volunteers, who spend a minimum of 2 hours per week with each student. Like the Basic Literacy program, ESOL is learner-centered.

Literacy Volunteers provides facilities and instruction for "Pre-GED" classes for students at approximately sixth grade level or higher who wish to ultimately obtain a GED certification. Certified teachers teach these classes and the teaching methodology relies on computer instructional software that students can access in our computer lab.
Obtaining U.S. Citizenship
This special program provides instruction to those individuals who wish to become U.S. citizens. Instruction is provided regarding U.S. government, history, culture, and legal responsibilities to prepare students for the United States Citizenship Examination.
Enhanced Learning
This program is for adults with learning difficulties (launched in 2000 with a pilot program funded by the Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier) and has been developed because tutors and board members have increasingly witnessed a need to help individuals who have not been able to learn through traditional Literacy Volunteers methods, and who need more structured and multi-sensory instruction. This program is a two-year course that demands significant commitment from the students.  We currently have two sections of Enhanced Learning classes with 25 students and most of the students are making impressive progress.
Spoken English
This program is a unique and special effort that provides instruction and practice in oral communication. Many of the Spoken English students have graduated from our Basic Literacy and ESOL programs, but still desire the skills to communicate effectively through speaking and listening in order to improve their employment prospects. Students write and perform plays, read poetry aloud, create professional role-playing scenarios, and rehearse interviews to increase self-confidence and communication skills. This program is not currently being offered, but will start again if adequate need is established.
!Read On
This program provides scalable reading instruction for adult learners functioning as low as 1.0 to 10.5 grade level. This program builds reading proficiency by using a proven vocabulary based approach that results in measurable gains in reading achievement among struggling readers. The computer driven program is organized into ten instructional levels with up to 30 instructional sequences that integrate vocabulary, reading, language arts, writing, and listening. There are 225 separate cycles of  instruction offering over 1,000 hours of instruction and practice.
Health Literacy
This program provides three health literacy training classes. This is three sections of five-week training sessions in Skills for Health Care Access and Navigation, Skills for Prevention and Screening, and Skills for Chronic Disease Management. Medical students at University Health who are training to become doctors are conducting this training.
