Our Top-Tier Programs

Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College offers a variety of core educational programming for adult learners, including:

Basic Literacy

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Pre-HiSET

We’re also in the process of developing additional programs based on the needs of our students. Stay tuned for future updates!

Basic Literacy

The Basic Literacy program allows us to work with adults ages 18 and up to improve their reading, writing, and communication skills. Our secret? Individualized and small group tutoring!

Whether you’re at the beginning of your literacy journey or are currently at a higher grade level, we can help! Once you complete our course, you’ll be encouraged to study for the Pre-GED test (also known as the Pre-HiSet). After that, the opportunities are endless! All our tutors are volunteers, who spend a minimum of 2 hours per week with each student. Most importantly, our program is learner-centered, meaning that tutors focus on the goals and needs of the students in designing curriculum exercises and homework.

Pre-HiSET

Literacy Volunteers provides facilities and instruction for “Pre-GED” classes for students at approximately sixth grade level or higher who wish to ultimately obtain a GED certification. Certified teachers teach these classes and the teaching methodology relies on instructional software that students can access in our computer lab.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program assists adults who’ve come to the United States from other countries. But despite being well-educated and trained, many of them have a limited grasp of the English language. Like the Basic Literacy program, ESL is learner-centered.</p>
